The interior is designed by co-owner Alexandra Hutchison, who also came up with the creative concept of the mural. At this point you’re probably wondering why I am telling you the details of what this place looks like and who is responsible and the reason for that is because I believe the interior of a restaurant is equally as important as the quality of food. Just like food can alter or heighten our experience, design plays a special role in how good the experience is.

We always talk about ambiance, how nice the cutlery and dishes are, but don’t give enough thought as to what the designer is really doing for us. For Hutchison, La Palma’s inspiration comes from her time spent in Venice Beach where she noticed many parallels between the artistic and eclectic Los Angeles neighborhood and Toronto’s very own Trinity-Bellwoods. For that reason La Palma is just one of those places where if you sit inside for long enough, you might just forget what city you’re in.
